I used Castor Oil on my hair for a year and this is what happened

Hairscissors and comb

After a hairdresser disaster in March 2023, I was trying to find ways to grow my long hair back fast. This hairdresser basically chopped my waist long hair in half, up to my shoulder blades when I just wanted a trim. I was desperate. She managed to get me from looking like a wood elf to a swamp witch in less than an hour. For about 8 months, I was struggling to get my hair in a decent updo for my ballet classes because it was simply too short. The main issue with my hair is that it grows super slowly. Hair grows about 1 cm per month on average; mine barely does. Therefore, I was googling methods to make my hair grow faster. I came across castor oil, which should support hair growth. That year, I spent my summer traveling through Indonesia. In my favorite shop “Tiga Natural” in Kuta, Lombok, I found a bottle of organic castor oil. So, I started to weekly use castor oil on my scalp and my hair in August 2023.

This is how I used castor oil on my hair and scalp

coconut oil

Castor oil is a very dense oil. It needs to be mixed with a carrier oil otherwise it will be difficult to wash it out. I use either coconut oil or olive oil as a carrier oil. I mix two tablespoons of the carrier oil with one teaspoon of castor oil and slightly warm it in a bain-marie. It makes it easier to apply because warm oil is more liquid and just feels better on the scalp than cold oil. To apply it, I dip my fingers in the oil and massage it gently into my scalp. From there I distribute it to the lengths and especially to the ends of my hair. With a wide tooth comb, I brush through my hair and twist it in a bun that I fix with a hairclip. I leave the oil for a few hours before washing it out. I shampoo twice, if necessary, even three times, and eventually use a conditioner.

This is what happened

It is pretty much one year that I use castor oil on my hair and scalp weekly. Did my hair grow faster? No. I can answer this clearly. But my hair changed to the better. It somehow got fuller, nicer, shinier, stronger, thicker, more voluminous. I have less breakage, less split ends. My scalp is healthier and happier. And this is not just my impression. I had other people asking me what I was doing to my hair because it would look different – better. I cannot really tell what exactly changed: My hair looks thicker but when I look at single hairs, they are not thicker. I may have more hair. I have a somewhat receding hairline on the left and right temple and there is definitely more baby hair growing. I will continue using castor oil on my scalp and my hair. My hair might still grow super slowly but if I can avoid cutting it because of split ends, as a result I will reach my goal of Rapunzel’s hair faster. Castor oil made my hair healthier. Not only hair but also eyebrows, lashes and skin love castor oil.
