The taste of summer - Non-alcoholic, cold, sparkling fruit punch
Deutsche Version
No garden party without it: cold, sparkling fruit punch. This cold, usually alcoholic beverage is traditionally made with white wine, sparkling wine, or champagne, along with sugar, mineral water, and fresh fruit or berries. Punch is served in a large bowl and poured into glasses using a ladle.
Since I don’t drink alcohol myself (simply because I don’t like it) but I absolutely love all kinds of sweet mixed drinks (the sweeter, the better!), I enjoy experimenting with traditional alcoholic drinks by creating my own non-alcoholic versions of them. This non-alcoholic punch with fresh summer fruits is perfect for anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to drink alcohol.
Note: If you want to make this punch for children, you should use an alternative to the tonic water used in this recipe. Children should not drink beverages containing quinine. Schweppes Wildberry, for example, is a good alternative since it does not contain quinine..
For this summer punch, I use nectarines, mangoes, watermelon, and lemons. But you can use any fruit or berries you like, such as pineapple, peaches, oranges, pears, strawberries, raspberries… The possibilities are endless. The important thing is simply that the fruit is nice and ripe and is washed thoroughly or even peeled, before you prepare it.
For four glasses of sparkling punch prepare
1 ripe and juicy nectarine
1 ripe and juicy mango
1 cut of seedless watermelon (or remove the seeds as far as possible)
and cut in small pieces. Mix the fruit with
1 dl of elderflower syrup (if you like it sweet, use 2 dl)
1 lemon in thin slices
½ a bunch of fresh mint leaves
in a big bowl or wide jug. The fruit should becovered with the syrup as much as possible. Let sit for about 30 min. Add
0.5 l Tonic Water with lemon and/or lime taste (e.g. Schweppes) or Schweppes Wildberry (no quinine)
mix well and let rest in the fridge for minimum one hour, better two or three hours.
Stir the punch again before serving. Add a few ice cubes to the glasses and fill them with the punch. Distribute the fruit pieces evenly among the glasses. Serve with a straw and long-handled spoons. Cheers!
