I used Rosemary Oil on my hair for one year and this is what happened

Deutsche Version

After loosing half of my hair lenght in a hairdresser-disaster a few years ago, I was trying to find ways and methods to grow my long hair back faster. Unfortunately, I am not blessed with fast hairgrowth at all. On average, hair grows 1 cm to 1.5 cm per month, or around 12 cm a year. My hair grows much slower than that. When researching on how to grow out hair faster, I found different hair oils that should trigger hair growth. The first one I tried was castor oil. For one year, I oiled my scalp and my hair with a mix of castor oil and coconut oil. Castor oil is a very dense and sticky oil that needs to be mixed with a lighter carrier oil before being applied on the scalp and hair. Coconut oil is a rather light oil and cointains lauric acid that is said to penetrate deep into the hair shaft and protect the hair from protein loss. Therefore I mixed the two oils. You can read here what happened to my hair and my scalp after oiling them for one year with a mix of castor oil and coconut oil.

How I used Rosemary Oil on my hair and scalp

Rosemary oil is said to promote blood circulation in the scalp, therefore ensuring that the hair roots receive a better supply of nutrients and oxygen, which in turn is said to lead to stronger hair and less hair loss. Rosemary oil is also said to promote a healthy scalp. Since healthy hair can only grow from a healthy scalp, I thought it was worth a try. So I bought a small bottle of rosemary oil and used it to massage my scalp and hair before every hair wash.

At first, I used pure rosemary oil. Unlike castor oil, rosemary oil is very light, very fluid, almost watery. Be careful when using pure rosemary oil: It is highly concentrated and can cause allergic reactions.

After trying it for a while, I was happy with the results and really wanted to keep using it long-term. But since pure rosemary oil is quite expensive, I first mixed it myself with inexpensive coconut oil or walnut oil, but later bought a ready-made blend with different oils.

Since I have very fine, wavy to curly hair that quickly becomes weighed down and stringy when I use products - especially oils - I applied rosemary oil using the OWC method before every shampoo.

The OWC method in a nutshell: Before every shampoo, you protect the lengths of your hair with oil to shield them from the drying effects of the shampoo. Simply apply a little oil to your hands, rub it in, distribute it along the lengths and ends of your hair, and let it sit for at least 15 minutes (or even several hours overnight). Since rosemary oil works primarily on the scalp, I also applied it to my scalp. To do this, I massaged my scalp with my oil-coated fingers until the oil was evenly distributed everywhere.

This is what happened to my hair

Unfortunately, I didn’t notice any faster hair growth. However, just like with castor oil or the OWC method in general, I did experience less hair breakage and split ends. While castor oil somehow made my hair appear more voluminous, the rosemary oil made my hair shinier and softer. I didn’t notice any faster hair growth or less hair loss. My scalp has always been very unproblematic. It takes quite a long time for my scalp and hair to get oily, however, I don’t have a dry or flaky scalp. Rosemary oil didn't make any difference either, neither for the better nor for the worse.

Since I love the scent of rosemary oil, I'll continue to use it as part of the OWC method. The OWC method protects my rather dry hair from drying out even more, helping me prevent split ends and hair breakage. As a result, I hardly ever have to trim my ends anymore, which ultimately means I will reach my goal of having beautiful, long hair faster.
