Three must-try breakfast spots in Hoi An
I have never been much of a breakfaster. However, when I am on holiday, everything is different: I like to get up early (6 am or even earlier) to enjoy the early morning peace and quite - and a few hours later a big savory breakfast. In Hoi An, Central Vietnam, I found three excellent breakfasts spots that I would like to share with you. They are all beautifully located and offer excellent food and drinks.
In the ricefield - Miss Hoi An Café
At Miss Hoi An Café you can either sit inside or enjoy their beautiful garden overlooking part of the river.
Miss Hoi An Café is in the middle of the rice field near An Bang Beach. I did an early morning bike tour through the ricefield with the plan of having breakfast there. The ricefield is a nice getaway from the bustling old town, perfect to explore by bicyle. Especially in the morning there is nearly no traffic and you will find yourself all alone with the waterbuffalos and the birds (nice spot for bird watchers!). There are guided bicycle tours, or you can go by yourself following a route, or just cycle aimlessly around and enjoy the beautiful scenery, like I did.
Tra Que Vegetable Village is nearby, where visitors can learn more about vegetables, experience how to grow them, participate in cooking workshops and enjoy delicious dishes made from fresh vegetables picked from the garden.
Miss Hoi An Café is nestled in a serene landscape at a tranquil stream leading to the river. The charming multi-story establishment stands alone amidst lush green fields. The picturesque interior features various seating options, including waterfront picnic tables, cozy sofa-style arrangements, and mat-style seating on the top floor. It’s an ideal place for breakfast lovers as they serve all-day breakfast alongside refreshing coffee and juices.
There is a small parking lot in front of the café for your bike or scooter.
The inside of Miss Hoi An Café is very picturesque, with various seating options.
They are open from 8 am to 6 pm. I arrived there a bit after 8 am and I think I caught them by surprise as they were still preparing for the day. I had to wait a bit until they were ready to serve me but I had the whole spot all to myself. I had an iced coconut coffee (I highly recommend trying it!), a fresh juice and eggs with avocado on sourdough. The sourdough was surprisingly good! I did not expect to find such good bread and baked goods (in general) in Vietnam. I learnt that the French brought baguettes to Vietnam and soon the Vienamese produced their own bread creations.
Their iced coconut coffee is delicious.
I had avocado and egg on sourdough. It came with tomatoes, cucumbers and a variety of fresh fruit.
At An Bang Beach - Phuong’s Coffee and Bar
At Phuong’s you can enjoy your breakfast directly at the beach.
Livining in a country with no sea, it is always very special for me to enjoy a meal overlooking the ocean. At Phuong’s Coffee and Bar, I could enjoy a rich and savory breakfast while listening to the crashing sound of the waves and watching the world slowly waking up. My original plan was to ride my bicylce from JM Athenia Beach Hotel to An Bang Beach and have breakfast at YESH! Tribe, Eat & Vibe. However, that morning I forgot to take my wallet with me. I only had my credit card in my phone case. Luckily I noticed early enough, before I sat down. They told me that they only accept cash, so I had to find an alternative. I wanted to return later to YESH! but I did not manage. However, their breakfast looks so yummy, that’s why I am linking it here too.
If you go there, let me know how it was!
Eventually, I found a breakfast spot where they would accept card: Phuong’s Coffee and Bar, directly at An Bang Beach. An Bang Beach is a stunning 4-kilometer expanse of sand to the North of its famous neighboring beach – Cua Dai. To get to An Bang beach, it only takes about 10 minutes by car from the center of Hoi An Ancient Town. Staying rather close to An Bang Beach, I rode my bike. Phuong’s is directly at the beach. I could enjoy my breakfast with a stunning view over the beach, watching the waves crash. I had a cold green tea, a watermelon juice and their egg benedict. They have such a great variety of different breakfast choices that it was super hard to pick one: Pho, Cao Lau, Muesli with yoghurt, cereals and fruit, pancakes, omlette or panini, as well as smoothies, different coffees and tea.
Their iced green tea was super refreshing.
The egg benedict came on sourdough with some avocados.
I love watermelon juice!
I was planning to go back on my last morning in Hoi An but then I found Yen Hoi An and I actually had to go there, as it looked so pretty!
On the river - Yen Hoi An
Yen Hoi An is directly located at the river, where you can also enjoy the sunset.
On my last evening in Hoi An, I wanted to check out Cua Dai Beach, because I did not make it there yet. Avoiding the busy main road, I was happily cycling through the little streets along the river. On my way back, my eye fell on a lovely looking entrance, decorated with a lot of flowers and plants. The inside looked super pretty, cute interior and directly on the river. However, they were about to close so I decided to come the next day and have breakfast here.
The next day, I got up early, ready to ride my bike to Yen Hoi An. I could park my bike across the street. I was warmly welcomed by their staff. Their choice was limited due to the still on-going Tết-holiday. In the week after Tết, many restaurants run at lower capacity, limiting their menue or charching a surcharge, if they are open at all. This one here was open but had only a limited menu. I did not care, because they had everything I was looking for!
Coconut Iced Coffee
The croissant was buttery and crispy at the same time
The yoghurt with granola was a little bit sweet, just perfect.
I opted for the croissant, which was buttery and crispy at the same time. I went again for the iced coconut coffee. You must try it, it is amazing! In addition to that, I had a yogurt granola bowl with fresh fruit. It was perfect! A little bit sweet but not too much. It was made with Vietnamese yogurt, so called Sữa Chua. Made with sweetened condensed milk, Vietnamese yogurt is the perfect balance of sweet and tart flavor. It has a silky, smooth, and with a soft custardy texture.
The view over the river here is stunning. Their little garden is decorated with love and care. When the weather is rainy, you can sit inside and enjoy your coffee there.
