I always bring back home souvenirs from my travels and I love crafting. When coming back from my snorkeling holidays on the Perhentian Islands, I passed through Kuala Terengganu, a city on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. I was trying to find a spot where I could craft something. I found my place in Kuala Terengganu at Noor Arfa Craft Complex.

Immer wenn ich auf Reisen bin, bringe ich ein paar Souvenirs mit nach Hause. Da ich lokales Handwerk sehr schätze, aber auch selber gerne Hand anlege, suche ich immer nach Gelegenheiten, meine Souvenirs selber zu machen. Bei meiner Suche nach einer solchen Gelegenheit, stiess ich auf den Noor Arfa Craft Complex in Kuala Terengganu. Der Noor Arfa Craft Complex ist nicht nur ein grosser Laden, wo man erlesene Batikstoffe und Kleidung aus Batik kaufen kann, sondern auch ein Ort, wo man viel über den ganzen Herstellungsprozess von Batik erfährt und auch bei den einzelnen Herstellungsschritten zuschauen kann. Und man kann dort seine eigene Batik malen.

Der Mississippi-Cake ist DER Kuchenklassiker aus meiner Kindheit. Kein Kindergeburtstag ohne den saftigen Schokoladenkuchen. Auch heute noch erfreut sich der Kuchen grosser Beliebheit bei Verwandten und Freunden. Wenn ich einen Mississippi-Cake backe, werde ich gefragt, warum mein Kuchen so schön saftig und feucht ist. Nach einer kleinen Recherche fand ich heraus weshalb: Ich backe diesen Schokoladenkuchenklassiker nach dem alten Rezept von Betty Bossy. Die Zutaten im neuen Rezept sind die gleichen geblieben. Der kleine aber feine Unterschied ist die Backtemperatur.

Off the southeastern coast of Sabah, about 35 km from Semporna, lies the little island Mabul. Since the 1970s, the island has been a fishing village. The majority of the villagers are Bajau Laut, or “sea gypsies”, as they are often referred to, due to their nomadic lifestyle. Staying at Mabul Beach Resort, right next to their little floating village and learning about their way of life, I was deeply impressed by this subgroup of ethnic Sama-Bajau.

Gunung Merapi ist der aktivste Vulkan Indonesiens und bricht regelmässig aus. Der knapp 3000 m hohe Vulkan befindet sich auf der indonesischen Insel Java. Oft sieht man Rauchwolken aus dem Krater aufsteigen. Die Ausbrüche des Vulkans haben schon zahlreiche Menschenleben gefordert. Als ich in Yogyakarta weilte, wollte ich aus Gründen den Vulkan eigentlich nicht besuchen. Als ich aber den buddhistischen Tempel Borobudur und Candi Prambanan besichtigte, schlug mein Fahrer Yono eine Merapi Jeep Tour vor zwischen den Besichtigungen der Tempel vor, da der Vulkan genau am Weg von einem Tempel zum nächsten liegt. Davon ausgehend, dass der Vulkan nicht gerade in den zwei Stunden ausbricht, während ich im Jeep an seinen Flanken herumkurve, stimmte ich zu. Ich bereute es nicht!
Discovering Java - Mount Merapi Jeep Tour
Gunung Merapi is the most active volcano in Indonesia and erupts regularly. The volcano is located on the Indonesian island Java, about 28 km from the city Yogyakarta. Several eruptions have caused fatalities among the people living on the flanks of the volcano as high as 1700 m above sea level. I wanted to skip visiting Merapi Volcano when I stayed in Yogyakarta but in between visiting Borobudur Temple and Candi Prambana, my guide for the day, Yono, suggested a Mount Merapi jeep tour. I am always up for an adventure and since the volcano was on the way from one temple to another, I agreed to do the jeep tour. I would not regret it!
